Help getting started, varying ages
Hi, this is going to be kind of long but I’m looking for some insight on where others have started. I would not consider myself a true beginner after playing sports my whole life and getting a degree in exercise science and some experience also working in PT internships; however, I still feel more comfortable with input on how others have started. I am about to take the lead on my own health (28F) alongside my mom (63) and dad (65) and I feel like suddenly I’ve forgotten everything.
I’ll start with myself, basically after being done with sports and routine I gained probably 50lbs which I lost a couple years ago and gained back after a particularly hard time in my life. Now I’m currently the heaviest I’ve ever been at 210. I am fairly healthy minus a heart condition that I take daily medication for, but there are no restrictions. I am still in pretty athletic shape despite the extra weight.
I am struggling to just get started because I suffer from so much anxiety when I go into the gym I can’t make myself do anything other than get on the treadmill for half an hour and leave. I need to go in with a set circuit because if I don’t know exactly what’s next I’ll just panic and leave. I want to begin lifting again which is where I need help. Any former female athletes who have come back into lifting after years break? I do workout videos at home when not going to the gym which I will continue but hope to lift as well 2-3 days to start.
The next problem I have is that my parents are getting older and starting to really feel it. My mom was hospitalized earlier this year with double pneumonia and it got her to stop smoking which.. she’d smoked way longer than I’ve been alive so she has gained some weight since stopping and Dr. wants her to go ahead and keep on top of it. She will be doing the workout videos with me too, but at the gym where are other senior beginner women starting as far as routine? Any good balance exercises for seniors? My dad mentioned to me this week he’s feeling like his balance is going downhill and that he nearly fell off the porch the other week.
Thanks for any input and I’m happy to hear your experiences or journeys.
