If you recently renewed your old passport, you might be wondering whether you need to do anything to keep using TSA PreCheck.

The short answer: getting a new passport does not mean you need a new TSA PreCheck membership or a new Known Traveler Number (KTN).

Your KTN that is associated with your existing TSA PreCheck membership is still valid, and is not dependent upon your passport number.

However, you might not be off the hook so easily, as there are a few things still worth checking:

**1. Make sure your KTN is still on your airline profile:** When you book a flight, your KTN needs to be attached to the reservation for the TSA PreCheck indicator to appear on your boarding pass. It's worth double-checking your frequent flyer profiles after renewing your passport.

**2. If your name changed, that's entirely different:** If all you did was renew your passport because it was coming close to expiring, that's pretty simple, but if you just renewed your passport due to a legal name change, be prepared for extra steps. You need to make sure your TSA PreCheck information and any applicable airline reservations are updated to reflect your new name. Name mismatches will cause problems for you even if you already have an active KTN.

**3. Global Entry is different than TSA PreCheck:** If you have Global Entry or another similar DHS Trusted Traveler Program, don't forget to update your passport information there after receiving your new passport.

**4. Your old passport number doesn't need to become your new KTN:** This is an easy one to get confused about. Your passport number and your Known Traveler Number are two completely different things. You don't need to worry about updating your KTN just because you renewed your passport.

Traveling with a new passport is one of those situations where it's worth spending the 15 or so minutes ahead of time to double check a few things before heading to the airport.
