Failed renewals on your whop: what the 5-day retry recovers, and what a same-day message adds (I built a Whop app for it)
Owner numbers first.
If your whop bills monthly, roughly 5–10% of renewals fail every cycle. Not cancellations: expired cards, bank blocks, limits. Whop's dunning retries the card and emails the member for about 5 days, then the membership is cancelled. Across paid communities, 25–40% of monthly churn is this kind of involuntary churn, and most owners never message those members because nothing tells them in time.
What moves the number: a personal message from your own support chat within minutes of the failed charge ("hey, your card bounced, here's the link to update it"), then two reminders. Owners who do this by hand recover 20–40% of the past-due MRR. The catch is doing it at 3am, every day.
I built Retainer to do exactly that as a Whop app: it listens for the failed payment, messages the member from your support chat in your voice, follows up twice, stops the second they pay, and shows you what actually came back. It also handles scheduled cancellations (win-back before the period ends) and members who went quiet. Read-only on your data, free plan for the failed-payment part, Pro $49/mo for the rest.
Beta: I'm onboarding 10 whops this month. I set it up for you, Pro is free for 60 days with code BETA60. Reply with your whop and I'll do it.
Question for owners here: do you do anything today when a renewal fails, or is it just the Whop emails?
