⚠️ Warning / Risks

This modification forces the Switch 2's fan to run at 100% speed in both Handheld and Docked Mode.

The purpose is to reduce thermal throttling. In games such as No Man's Sky and Resident Evil Village, which can experience drops to around 40–45 FPS, the higher cooling capacity may allow the system to maintain higher clocks and therefore provide higher and/or more stable framerates.

In my testing, some games gained around 10–15% or more performance, depending on the workload. Your results may vary.

Important:

The fan will remain at full speed even when the console is in Standby/Sleep Mode.

Shut the Switch 2 down completely when you are not using it, otherwise the constantly running fan can drain the battery.

This modification increases power consumption, especially in Handheld Mode.

I measured approximately 28 W maximum system draw in Handheld Mode using a power bank, compared with roughly 20 W under normal conditions. This is an external power-bank measurement and not an officially verified Nintendo measurement, so the actual console power consumption may differ.

Because of the increased power consumption, this modification is not recommended for people who frequently travel with their Switch 2.

The modification may also affect your warranty.

🛠️ What you need

Only three things are required:

Plastic opening tool / plastic card

Tri-wing screwdriver + Phillips screwdriver

Electrically insulating tape (e.g. Kapton or another non-conductive tape)

\---

🔧 Installation

1. Completely shut down the Switch 2

Do not perform the modification while the console is running.

2. Open the console

Disassemble the Switch 2 until you can access and remove the metal cooling plate/fan assembly.

Use a proper teardown guide if you are not familiar with opening the console.

3. Remove the fan

Disconnect and remove the fan.

Important: When looking at the fan connector, keep the connector in its original orientation. Do not rotate or flip the connector around, as the orientation matters for identifying the correct contact.

4. Isolate the PWM contact

With the fan connector facing you, the leftmost contact is the PWM control line.

Cover only this small contact with a tiny piece of electrically insulating tape.

Make absolutely sure the tape does not accidentally cover or bridge the other contacts.

5. Reassemble enough to test

Before completely rebuilding the console, carefully reconnect everything required for a test.

Do not touch the motherboard or other components while the console is powered on.

6. Power on and test

Turn the Switch 2 on.

If the PWM line has been successfully isolated, the fan should run at maximum speed continuously instead of being dynamically controlled by the system.

Test the console for several minutes and monitor temperatures, fan behavior and performance.

\---

📈 Why does this work?

The Switch 2 normally controls the fan speed using PWM. By isolating the PWM control signal, the fan is no longer receiving the normal speed-control signal and can operate at its maximum speed.

The additional cooling can reduce the likelihood of CPU/GPU thermal downclocking, particularly during sustained workloads.

However, this does not increase the actual performance capability of the SoC. It primarily helps the system maintain higher clocks when temperature would otherwise cause it to reduce them.

⚠️ Disclaimer

Do this modification at your own risk. Opening the Switch 2 and modifying its cooling system can damage the console and may void your warranty. I am not responsible for damage, overheating, battery drain, or other consequences resulting from this modification.

Results will vary depending on the game, ambient temperature, console condition and individual unit.

Ill just put it under Tricks due to not being an Hack, just an small Hardware Modification.
