iPhone 18 Pro: ₹1,64,900 here vs $1,199 in the US. Here's where the extra ₹51,000 actually goes.
Pre-orders open tomorrow, so: the math, minus the usual "GST bro" comment war.
| India | US | |
|---|---|---|
| Sticker price | ₹1,64,900 | $1,199 (~₹1,13,900 @ 95) |
| Tax included? | Yes, 18% GST | No |
| Price before tax | ~₹1,39,700 | ~₹1,13,900 |
So the phone is ₹26,000 more expensive here before GST is even applied. GST is the visible ₹25k. It's not the whole story.
What makes up the rest:
| Reason | What's actually happening |
|---|---|
| Customs duty | Pro models still land here largely as finished imports. 15% BCD + surcharge, and GST is then charged on top of the duty. Tax on tax. |
| "Made in India" ≠ cheaper | Mostly the non-Pro line, mostly for export. Display, chip, camera, memory are all imported anyway. |
| Rupee cushion | 88 → 95 in one year. Apple locks one INR price for 12 months, so they price for the worst rate they expect, plus buffer. If the rupee recovers, that buffer becomes margin — it never comes back to you. |
| No competition | Nobody at ₹1.65 lakh is scaring Apple in India. The Pro Max buyer here isn't cross-shopping a Pixel and Apple knows it. |
When to actually buy:
| Timing | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Launch week | Worst price of the year. Every year. |
| 4–6 weeks post-launch | Previous gen finally drops |
| Oct sale window | Best real number — usually on last year's model |
| Any Apple price cut | Doesn't happen. Discounts come from Flipkart/Amazon and your bank, not Apple. |
TL;DR: ~₹25k GST + ~₹26k of duty, currency hedging and margin. Last year's 17 Pro in November beats the 18 Pro on launch day, comfortably.
Open question: is any Pro assembly actually happening here this cycle? Reporting is conflicting and I'd like to be wrong about that bit.
