And then Sarbuland reaches Islamabad.

He calls Mudassir.

And almost casually asks him:

How is your zan-mureedi going? 😭

And this is where I want to return to the heart.

Because I don't actually think the heart works in mysterious ways.

I think the heart knows the straightest path available to it.

When tragedy strikes and you stop pursuing your own desires, the heart doesn't necessarily obey you.

Sometimes it simply begins reaching for whatever little hope it can still see.

And long before Sherdil died, Rabiya had already opened a tiny door somewhere inside Sarbuland.

Not love.

Not even something he properly understood.

And that becomes important now.

Because when tragedy struck, Sarbuland began closing doors.

But how do you close a door you don't even know was opened?

You can't.

So when Sarbuland reaches Islamabad and calls Mudassir, I don't think his heart is consciously looking for Rabiya.

It is looking for hope.

For something familiar.

For his friend.

For one small island of ordinary life in the enormous ocean of grief he has been drowning in.

Dard ke samandar mein,

Anginat jazeere hain…

In the ocean of sorrow, there are countless islands.

And for a moment, Mudassir feels like one.

Sarbuland needs his friend.

He wants to talk.

But Mudassir is happy.

He is preparing a birthday surprise for his wife.

And Sarbuland is Sarbuland.

He cannot walk into somebody else's happiness carrying the full weight of his grief and ask them to carry it with him.

Especially not today.

So he listens.

And somewhere in that conversation, the loneliness becomes heavier.

Because the friend he reached for has a life waiting for him.

A wife.

A birthday.

A surprise.

A reason to celebrate.

And Sarbuland?

Sarbuland has arrived in Islamabad carrying a grief he doesn't quite know where to put.

Mudassir invites him to dinner.

And Sarbuland refuses.

That refusal matters to me.

Because this is what Sarbuland has already begun doing since Sherdil's death:

closing doors.

Not because there is no warmth behind them.

Because he no longer knows how to walk into warmth while carrying this much grief.

He doesn't believe he can perform happiness there.

So he closes this door too.

To me, this wasn't simply:

Sarbuland calls Mudassir. Mudassir invites him to dinner. Sarbuland says no.

There was something painfully human happening underneath it.

A grieving man had reached for his friend.

He just needed somewhere for his heart to go.

And for one brief moment, it went towards Mudassir.

But Mudassir was standing inside happiness.

And Sarbuland was standing outside it carrying death.

So when Mudassir opens that door and essentially says—

come in—

Sarbuland doesn't.

And that is what breaks my heart about this scene.

He has no idea that the house he refuses to enter contains the one door he had forgotten to close.
