I found my long-lost sister, then discovered what appears to be a fake cancer scam on GoFundMe for $30,000

I finally found my long-lost sisters after looking for them for years, and now I don’t know what the fuck to do.
Okay, so I feel like I need to give some background because otherwise none of this is going to make sense.
I was adopted when I was six years old. The only person from my biological family that I stayed in occasional contact with was my biological grandmother.
My biological sister and I were adopted into the same home, and at one point my grandmother wanted us to come visit her. My adoptive mom allowed us to go, so we went to visit her.
I was 12 at the time.
While we were there, my grandmother pulled out this yellow manila envelope. She told us that there were actually three other siblings out there who were older than us, and that they had also been adopted.
The only thing she knew about them, according to her, were their names. She had one baby picture of each of them in that envelope. That was it.
She claimed she didn’t know who had adopted them or where they were in the world. She didn’t know what had happened to them or whether they were okay.
I was completely flabbergasted and didn’t know how to process it. My mother had passed away when I was six years old, so finding out that I had three older siblings out there felt like there were pieces of her still somewhere in the world. From that day on, I made it my mission to find them.
Then, years later, when I was 19, my brother found me through an Ancestry search.
And obviously, that was fucking insane. After spending all those years wondering if I’d ever find any of them, suddenly one of them had found me.
My brother and I got along like peas and carrots, and I’m so thankful he found me.
We’ve continued to search for our other two sisters.
And then about two weeks ago, it finally happened.
I saw that my brother had made a group chat with me and my biological sister. Before he could even send whatever message he was about to send, I called him because I knew something was going on.
I asked him if everything was okay, and he told me he found our other two sisters.
He then gave me the lowdown on everything he had talked to one of our sisters about. He also told me that our other sister didn’t have any interest in opening that wound of the biological family, which I actually completely understand. I don’t blame her at all for that because our family is pretty fucking crazy.
But at least we finally knew where two of them were.
And after all those years of wondering about them, even if only one of them wanted to talk, we were so thankful to finally have a way to contact her.
We were excited, but we were also pretty cautious at first. We didn’t want to overwhelm her or scare her away after we spent so long trying to find her.
We started to get to know the sister who was willing to talk to us.
We found out that she had given all of her children up for adoption because she had struggled with some pretty serious addiction and mental health issues.
It was really disheartening to hear because through all these years, I’ve just hoped that maybe they were able to escape the addiction cycle that runs deep in our family.
My older sister is doing well and is married and has a daughter, and she seems very happy.
After that initial conversation with the sister who was willing to talk to us, neither my brother nor I really heard from her again.
My brother and I have talked about it, and we’re both struggling with it because after so many years of searching for our sisters and wondering what they would be like, this is obviously not how we imagined things going.
This morning, my brother and I were talking about everything and how we were both feeling about the whole situation. We were also digging through her Facebook a little, just trying to learn more about her and get a better idea of who she was.
Through her Facebook profile, she was pretty open about serving time in jail and prison, so I decided to do some legal searches. I searched for cases in the states I knew she had lived in, and what I found was a pretty long and recent criminal history.
Then I realized I had never actually searched for her on TikTok, so I decided to look there too.
About five profiles came up, and every single one of them had her picture. I clicked through them, and one of the profiles had a picture of her with her significant other and one of her sons. The bio said that she lived in California and that she had a son who was battling cancer, with a link to a GoFundMe.
But I knew that wasn’t the whole story, because this was one of the children she had previously told us she had given up for adoption and no longer had custody of.
The GoFundMe link no longer worked and the page was no longer active, but I decided to dig a little deeper myself. I went to GoFundMe and searched her name, and I found another fundraiser that she had opened for $30,000. It was created at the beginning of this year. She said she needed the money for travel and expenses related to her son’s cancer treatment, and that her son was four years old. She had also given the child a completely different name.
I don’t have contact with any of the rest of her family or anybody who would know anything about this, but I know for a fact that she doesn’t have custody of any of her children. I also found that she still has active cases open for identity theft.
And honestly, I don’t even know how to feel about any of this.
This morning I woke up feeling sad because I felt like my sister didn’t want anything to do with me.
Now I feel like I don’t want anything to do with her.
But what the fuck am I even supposed to do with this information?
Do I just leave it alone? Stay friends with her on Facebook, keep my distance, and mind my own business? Or do I say something about what I found?
Part of me feels like I shouldn’t get involved because I don’t actually know the whole situation, and I don’t want to open myself up to a bunch of bullshit or drama that I don’t need. But at the same time, I can’t just unsee what I found.
I’m basically trying to figure out if I should just leave this alone and let her live her life, or if there’s something I should actually be doing here.
