Boss has keeps assigning work and changing my focus on to different assigned projects. Now someone new has been hired and told to do a project I have been working on and proposed that has been rejected. What do I do?

Advice

Hello All,

I hope you are doing well!

I am a learning content designer for a company and have been working there for over a year as the first in my role. The company I work for has a few products, but the learning documentation was years behind before I started. I was initially assigned to update and create documentation for the products.

Then I was assigned other extra work:

  • Redesign learning paths
  • A few Marketing projects related to my content
  • External and internal onboarding materials
  • Different Zapier automated workflows
  • Learning content writing and style standards

Each time, I made sure to say "I will have to deprioritize other work to complete this," and they would still want me to complete the newly assigned work. Joke is that I would be told to deprioritize every single item, and now we are back at the start.

They recently hired some new people kind of in generalist positions, and one I had a meeting with told me that they are redesigning learning paths. I had a proposal finished with samples of future work, and it was initially approved but then rejected since they didn't like it anymore because it would take too long.

The part that is annoying is that a new employee suggested what was in my proposal, and they love the idea again. I have the work done, and I bet it will be rejected again when the new hire suggests it due to it taking too much time commited.

I don't believe there is a way to avoid the time required for this, and it is annoying that they didn't say anything to me and I am informed about nothing. They have also stated I am in charge of this learning, which is hard to believe when I get no knowledge of changes with new hires, and the writing and style standards I made are not being used even when they have been approved. I mention this when I am told to publish the content, as I am not supposed to review whether this standard is upheld, when my boss reviews the document, the same boss who approves the style standards and reviews the content.

I don't know if I should talk to my boss about this specific situation or just look for a new job, as this scenario feels similar to other issues in the past. If I were to talk to them I don't know how I can avoid it feeling negative or accusatory as I would be doing both those things. If you have any advice please let me know as I worry I am being difficult or maybe this is a normal and expected behaviour that I just haven't experienced.
