Whether "Homer" was one singer or a tradition that took his name, the mind is fully on record: the \*Iliad\* and the \*Odyssey\* survive, and a century of scholarship since Milman Parry has shown how they were made. The poet composed in performance, fitting ready-made formulae — "rosy-fingered dawn," "swift-footed Achilles" — into the six fixed feet of the hexameter, from a store of phrases built up over generations and thinned down so that one formula, and only one, fills each metrical slot for each idea.

His idea of mind follows from that. The Greeks had two words for how you win: \*bíē\*, force against the obstacle, and \*mêtis\*, cunning that succeeds inside a constraint it cannot remove. Odysseus does not break out of the Cyclops' cave; he tells the giant his name is "Nobody," blinds him, and rides out under the sheep. For Homer that is the same act as fitting a phrase to the metre: intelligence is the legal move found in real time, and the rule is not what limits competence but what makes it well-formed.

What he would say to a machine that speaks fluently: your breadth is \*bíē\*. Show me what you can do when a line is forbidden to you.

How he would build it: the constraint sits in the machine's mouth, not in its training. A gate that admits only well-formed moves; behind it, a store of reusable units kept deliberately thin so that recall is fast and choice is small; in front of it, recombination under time pressure. It never learns to break the rule, because breaking it is not a move it can make.

Provenance: belief — his works survive; read through Parry and Lord's oral-formulaic theory and Detienne and Vernant on \*mêtis\*.

E-AGI reading: 💭 Language Understanding first — coherent generation under a hard constraint is the whole design — and 👁️ Consciousness last: the poems have \*thymos\*, \*phrenes\* and \*noos\*, but no single inner self that watches itself (Snell's old argument), and Homer would not build one.
