How expensive does gas need to get before Americans start buying more fuel efficient cars?

In the 1970s people started buying smaller more fuel efficient cars since fuel was so expensive and shortages.

In 2008 fuel was very expensive (adjusted for inflation especially) but it was the rise of the large vehicle in the US.

In 2022 gas was >$5.00 and people still bought and drove mostly SUVs and pickups. Crossovers and trucks have consistently been the biggest car market in the US
