Advice about my lease situation
I’m currently living in Washington, DC and signed a 12-month lease last month for an apartment. I’m trying to figure out what my options are because I’ve had several issues with the living situation and now want to move to alternative housing.
It is a shaded two bedroom suite with a suitemate.
Before I even moved in, I had concerns about the room. I was never shown the room I received. The room has no window and only has a frosted glass panel looking into the living room. I raised concerns about the room before moving in.
There is also a bathroom privacy issue. The bathroom has entrances on both sides, and my roommate walked in while I was using the bathroom. I spoke with a manager about the privacy issue over the phone and was told they would get back to me about it, but they never did.
It has now been nearly a month since I first raised these concerns.
The only resolution they have offered is to move me to another apartment. However, that apartment is significantly more expensive than what I am currently paying. I don’t really see how moving to a much more expensive unit resolves the situation.
I also raised these concerns when I was moving in. Now that I’m asking about leaving the lease, management is telling me that they cannot cancel the lease and that I would need to sublet/find someone to take over.
They are also telling me that I am now outside of some kind of cancellation window, which I’m confused about because I had already raised these concerns before and shortly after moving in.
At this point, I’m not sure what my options are.I want to handle this properly and understand what rights I have given the circumstances.
I’m looking for advice from anyone familiar with DC tenant law or who has dealt with a similar situation.
What options do I have at this point, and what steps should I take next? Should I contact the DC Office of the Tenant Advocate, seek legal advice, continue negotiating with management, or look into the subletting process?
