[Discussion] Academic looking for sources on Ork "belief makes it real" (WAAAGH! field) — thinking about a paper comparing it to financial markets

Hobby

Hey all,

A bit of an odd request. I'm an academic philosopher (I work on collective intentionality — basically, how groups come to share beliefs and how that shared belief becomes a social fact) and a casual-not-hardcore 40k fan. I recently ran into the well-worn meme that the stock market works like Ork technology: it "functions" because enough people collectively believe it does, the same way a Mek's shoota fires because the Ork holding it is dead certain it will, or a truck goes faster once it's painted red.

I think there's an actual paper in this — using the WAAAGH! field as a thought experiment/illustration for how collective belief constitutes institutional facts (think John Searle's "money is money because we all treat it as money," except with more explosions and less regulation).

What I need from you lot: sources, canonical and non-canonical, about Ork psychic reality-warping via belief — codex entries, novels, White Dwarf articles, designer's notes, interviews, wikis, forum lore-dumps, whatever you've got. Ideally, with a page number, edition, or direct quote, but I'll take "I read this somewhere in a 5th ed codex" too.

Specifically chasing anything on:

  • The WAAAGH! field itself as a gestalt psychic phenomenon generated by Ork numbers/proximity
  • "Red ones go fasta" / painted explosives / any canon articulation of the belief → effect mechanism
  • Mekboyz and why Ork tech stops working when a non-Ork (non-believer) operates it
  • Weirdboyz as individuals who can consciously tap/direct the field (vs. the "ambient" background effect)
  • Any Imperial (Adeptus Mechanicus / Inquisition) in-universe theorizing about why this happens — the "quantum probabilistic" or "machine spirit" explanations count
  • Non-canon sources are totally fair game too — interviews with GW writers, old White Dwarf "designer's notes," forum lore threads, even well-argued fan theories, as long as you flag them as non-canon
