Why do people seem confused by sequential letters and numbers in public?

Airplanes, concerts, the cinema.

The aisles and seats are numbered. Why do functioning adults, ostensibly with jobs and families, find it impossible to u drstand that B comes after A, 25 is next to 26, etc.

I accept a plane may be a new environment for you but do you forget how the alphabet and numbers work?
