Void Century Theory
We know the walls of the void century. We just don't know what happened BEYOND the boarders.
What we know: Imu, along with 19 other nations formed an alliance and went to war with an ancient kingdom who had advanced technology that 'threneted to destroy the world'. We know Imu existed 800 years ago along with Davy D Jones, Joyboy, Emith, Zou.(And possibly the 5 elders: St. Saturn, Nusjuro, Peter, Mars, Warcury) There's also another story that the world government tells (the lie) 20 kings came together to form the World Government 800 years ago.
After which, the 20 kings came together and placed their weapons at the foot of the Empty Throne. Out of a sign of peace, and that no one man will sit at the top of the world.
My theory:
As we know, Joyboy wanted peace and freedom. Imu potentially wanted order and control. What if Imu is giving Joyboy EXACTLY what he wanted? Imu went to war with Joyboy over ideologies and control. The ancient kingdom was vastly for technologically advanced than the entire world. They wanted to unleash that that technology so everyone in the world could experience it together. Everyone would be one. Humans, beats, animals would live together as one.
Imu, and the 20 kings hated this. They wanted control, money. They didn't want their citizens to receive the same treatment as them because to a royal. Why would I share my food my freedoms with an insect? Imu formed them, an army to go to war against the agents of the control of their ancient weapons, technology etc. the world government didn't want the world to know this, so they erased history and everything having to do with what happened 800 years ago.
The 5 elders have lived in Pangia Castle and have done so for 800 years acting as bureaucracts, administrative managers of the entire world. Playing 4D chess manipulating the world behind the screen for one man, one person. Saint Nerona Imu. The King of the World.
Then, 900 years ago Davy D Jones was the King of the World. (Weather he resided in Pangea Castle, or in the Ancient Kingdom is still up for debate on what the One Piece actually is.) Along with Joyboy, whatever his role was.
Joyboy may have been a member of the D clan. Imu, to this day holds an ancient hatred and resentment toward Joyboy and all people baring the name "D".
The "D" means "The natural enemy of the Gods." Which, it's true meaning are still a mystery.
I was thinking, what if thr world of One Piece is free? But it's a total representation of the paradox of freedom. This concept originates in classical political philosophy and was famously detailed by Plato in The Republic, and later expanded upon by philosopher Karl Popper in his book The Open Society and Its Enemies.
In a state of absolute freedom, there are no rules, limits, or shared boundaries. Everyone has the theoretical "freedom" to do anything—including the freedom to bully, steal, or suppress others.
Without rules to protect the weak, aggressive or powerful individuals use their freedom to strip away the autonomy of weaker people.
Plato argued that extreme, chaotic freedom (such as an unguided democracy) creates so much social instability that people eventually grow exhausted. Out of a desperate desire for safety and order, they will willingly submit to a tyrant or absolute controller who strips everyone of freedom in exchange for stability.
What is Imu doing? Stripping away freedom, destroying islands, subjecting entire races to be forced into slavery and persecution. Imu is quite literally the opposite of freedom.
Imu is telling Joyboy, Luffy to this day, and on Elbaf (In my view) "This is what you wanted, absolute freedom. A world where everyone can live in harmony, until one group, 20 armies, 2 kings came together and said no. You can't share freedom with insects. Joyboy may have very well had 100 years of absolute freedom. It just took 100 years for it to crumble. (Relate back to the paradox of freedom)
Imu gave Joyboy what he wanted, freedom. Tho, the world doesn't change based on freedom. The world isn't a fucking game. (I'm also like high asf rn)
