Average cost for a roof replacement these days?

Hey everyone, my parents in Visalia are looking to replace their roof after 30+ years. Their house isn't big (1300 SQ ft) and not at all complex, just a single story. Easy enough that my dad and my grandpa were the ones who did the roof last time.

So when I say my parents were floored when the first quote they got was 30-50k, that's an understatement. Is that really the average price for re-roofing a house in the valley these days? Friends (in other states, granted) with much larger and complex roofs have still paid under 20k.

My parents are pretty demoralized about it as they are retired and on a fixed income, not really looking to start making the equivalent of a house payment just to put a roof on. So if anybody has used roofers or a company you'd recommend, that were fair and you were happy with their work, please give their info.
