FAQs & Troubleshooting for Zero-Markup IBKR/Paasa Transfers - for AU Bank

Investing

Over the last few months, I’ve written a few posts detailing the cheapest ways to remit funds for international investing, specifically breaking down how to use AU Small Finance Bank to get zero forex markup and zero processing fees for IBKR and Paasa transfers (Post 1, Post 2, Post 3). While it’s been great seeing so many of you successfully set up your international DCA pipelines, I’ve noticed the same set of questions popping up repeatedly in the comments, especially around account activation, app quirks, and locking in the exact interbank rate.
To save everyone time and keep all the solutions in one place, I’ve compiled this master FAQ based on the most common queries from those threads.

Account Setup & Bank Selection

Q: Do I need a premium or high-balance account with AU Bank to get the zero forex markup? A: No. A standard zero-balance digital savings account works perfectly and is fully eligible for the zero markup and zero processing fee offer.

Q: Is a debit card required when opening the AU account? A: No, you do not need a debit card for Netbanking or App activation. Skipping the debit card saves you from paying unnecessary annual maintenance charges.

Q: How long does the AU Bank account activation take? A: Be prepared for potential video KYC glitches. Account activation typically takes 24-48 hours. If you apply on a weekend, expect the processing to take a bit longer.

Q: Why use the IBKR/Paasa method instead of INDmoney, Vested, or Tickertape? A: Platforms like INDmoney do not support Ireland-domiciled (UCITS) ETFs or markets outside the US. Investing in UCITS is critical for non-US residents to legally avoid the flat 40% US Estate Tax and reduce dividend withholding taxes. Additionally, the INR-to-USD conversion charges on those platforms are generally much higher.

The Remittance Process & App Quirks

Q: Can I do the transfer completely online, or is a branch visit required? A: It is now 100% online. AU Bank recently added Purpose Code S0001 (Indian Portfolio Investment Abroad - in equity shares) to their mobile app and Netbanking portal, so physical branch visits and manual A2 forms are no longer required.

Q: The AU App's account number field only accepts numbers, but my Paasa/IBKR account has a letter in it (e.g., U1234567). What do I do? A: Enter only the numeric part into the designated "Account Number" field. Then, in the "Remarks (Message to Beneficiary Bank)" or SWIFT instructions section, explicitly write your full account string (e.g., U1234567) along with your full name. This ensures the receiving bank credits the correct ledger.

Q: Where do I get the "Account Confirmation Letter" if AU Bank asks for proof of the overseas account? A:

  • Direct IBKR Users: Go to Performance & Reports -> Statements -> Other Reports -> Account Confirmation Letter.
  • Paasa Users: Call IBKR India support, state your Paasa account number (starts with 'U'), and request a temporary password. Log into the main IBKR portal with it and download the letter using the same steps above.

Q: How do I ensure IBKR credits my account quickly once the wire is sent? A: Log into your IBKR portal and create a "Deposit Notification" for the exact USD amount you are wiring. When the wire hits their system, it automatically matches this notification and credits your funds instantly.

FX Rates, Timing & Fees

Q: When should I initiate the transfer to get the true interbank rate? A: Always execute your transfer between Monday and Friday, from 9:15 AM to 3:15 PM IST while the Indian forex market is open. Transfers initiated outside this window (or on weekends/holidays) will not lock in real-time rates.

Q: What if the rates are highly volatile during the day? A: On days with high market volatility, the bank's displayed rate might lag slightly behind live Google/XE rates. If they aren't in sync, wait until the early afternoon for the rates to align, but make sure to execute before the 3:15 PM cutoff.

Q: How long does the money take to reach IBKR? A: If processed online during the forex window, the entire end-to-end process usually takes around 3 to 4 hours. You can submit the form at 2:00 PM and have the funds ready to trade in IBKR by 5:30 PM.

Q: Are there really no processing fees? What about SWIFT charges? A: AU Bank charges zero forex markup and zero SWIFT/processing fees. The only amount deducted above the exact interbank conversion rate is the government-mandated GST (e.g., roughly ₹218 on a $1,500 transfer).

Strategy & Taxation

Q: Is it better to send a large lump sum or can I do smaller monthly SIPs? A: Because AU Bank does not charge a flat processing fee per transaction, there is zero cost disadvantage to sending smaller chunks. You lose the exact same percentage to GST whether you send $500 or $5,000, making it perfect for regular Dollar Cost Averaging (DCA).

Q: How is TCS (Tax Collected at Source) handled on these transfers? A: AU Bank's portal links with the RBI's CBS data to automatically fetch your utilised LRS limit for the current financial year. If your total remittances cross the ₹7 Lakh threshold, the bank's system will automatically calculate and deduct the 20% TCS at the time of the transfer. (You can claim this TCS back when you file your ITR.
