Why is diesel fuel now so much more expensive than regular unleaded?

I just saw something that claimed the average price for diesel fuel is more than it has ever been - $6.00 a gallon. I know we're paying a lot for gas regardless, but why is diesel so much more? In the past, it's been the cheapest option. What changed?
