Isn't gatekeeping anime only gatekeeping the community?

I was thinking about it and isn't it impossible to gatekeep anime?

Like no one can physically stop someone from watching anime, so technically "gatekeeping" is just gatekeeping people from the community?

Which technically isn't even a big deal right? The person is better off not being part of the community and just watching anime on their own.
