**🔴 High — Iraq confirms Saudi pipeline-attack drones originated on its territory**
**What changed:** Early September 12, Iraq’s prime minister’s office said its investigation confirmed that the drones used in the September 10 attacks on Saudi Arabia’s East–West oil pipeline originated in Iraq. Baghdad dismissed the military commander responsible for operations in southern Maysan province. Iraq also closed the Shalamcheh crossing with Iran as a precaution and launched a wide-scale search for the perpetrators. **Confirmed versus disputed:** The Iraqi finding independently confirms Saudi Arabia’s assessment that the drones came from Iraqi territory. The responsible organization, launch circumstances and any Iranian involvement remain unestablished publicly.

**Why it matters now:** This converts a contested Saudi attribution into a confirmed cross-border security breach involving Saudi Arabia’s principal Hormuz-bypass pipeline. Baghdad’s rapid disciplinary and border-security measures indicate it considers further launches and Saudi retaliation credible risks.

**Directly affected:** Saudi energy infrastructure, Iraq’s government and security forces, communities around the Iraq–Iran border, Red Sea export operations and global oil consumers.

**Main escalation risk:** Failure to arrest the perpetrators—or another attack from Iraq—could trigger Saudi strikes inside Iraqi territory and widen confrontation with Iran-aligned armed groups.

**Watch next:**
Identification or claim of responsibility by the attackers
Evidence concerning Iranian direction or logistical support
Saudi acceptance of Iraq’s response or movement toward retaliation
Further Iraqi security dismissals, arrests or border restrictions
Confirmation of pipeline restart and restored throughput

**Clavr Falls certainty:** **Established** that the drones originated in Iraq; **Contested** regarding the perpetrators and any Iranian role; **Unsupported** that Saudi retaliation has been ordered.
