Ever read a cozy book and have been taken off guard by something the MC does (in a good way)?
I'm reading Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst. Kiela's been at her own family home for a few days now and Larran's come back for the second time to help out with some stuff, cleaning her chimney, preparing some food, etc. You sense that it's building the relationship between the two. Then she >!shuts him down and says that he's been invading her privacy, coming uninvited to her house to do these things without asking her, etc.!<
It was like a disc-scratch moment, but then I thought about it. Kiela stayed true to herself and wanting to be keep to herself (and Caz). Just because a friendly (admittedly attractive) neighbor comes to help out with stuff, doesn't mean she has to let her standards bend. It actually made me respect her more as a character and makes me more invested in her development. It doesn't detract from the coziness of the story either.
Curious if anyone's read a book like this where a moment's been building a certain way and then something else happens that surprises you, but you're glad the character went in this direction?
