HIM department staffing/responsibilities
For those who oversee an HIM/medical records department, I’m curious how your department is structured and how responsibilities are divided among staff.
If you’re comfortable sharing:
What type and size of facility do you work for?
How many employees or FTEs are in your department?
What are each employee’s job title and primary responsibilities?
Which functions are handled in-house versus outsourced?
Does your department also oversee coding, privacy, clinical documentation, cancer registry, transcription, or utilization review?
Are there any responsibilities you feel your department is understaffed for?
I oversee HIM at a CAH, and I’m especially interested in hearing from other small or rural hospitals. I’d like to better understand how similar facilities distribute responsibilities such as ROI, scanning/indexing, chart analysis and completion, provider deficiencies, record corrections, audits, and other day-to-day HIM duties.
Thank you to anyone willing to share!
