If I take the names of public domain superheroes and create new versions of those characters with new designs, origins, and powers, would those new versions become copyrighted or would they still be public domain?

I am currently working on a project which reinvents/creates new versions of various public domain superheroes. If I ever get this work published and copyrighted, would the versions I create still be public domain or would they be copyrighted?
