Proton Mail on Linux

I’m considering using Proton Mail as my main email provider on Linux.

What is the best way to use Proton Mail on Linux? Is Proton Mail Bridge + Thunderbird the recommended setup?

More importantly, I want to have a complete local backup of all my emails in a format that is not locked to Proton and that I could use in the future to migrate to another email provider if necessary.

Ideally, I’d like the backup to include all emails, folder categories and labels, attachments, dates, and metadata.

What is the best approach for this on Linux?

Is Proton’s Export Tool the best option, or would you recommend using Proton Mail Bridge with Thunderbird and backing up the local Thunderbird mailbox?

What do you personally use for a reliable, long-term Proton Mail backup?
