What to expect when trading in a car that still has payments for another?

Hello! I may plan to trade in my 2023 Honda Civic for a new (or very lightly used) Kia SUV (not decided on which one yet, but I'm leaning towards Kia mainly for aesthetics (post 2022) balanced with reliability). I've decided I want to upgrade for trunk space, and overhead cargo-ability. I love my civic and I'll miss her, and I hate SUVs, but I'm just thinking about my hobbies and making the sacrifice for practicality. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated. But that's also not the main reason I'm here.

I have never bought a car alone. Always had an adultier adult with me to hold my hand and say no when needed. If I want to trade in my Civic for something else, how do I go about the process generally, especially since I'm still paying off my Civic? Should I expect my loan to just rollover into a new car based on the price of my Civic and how much I had left to pay off? Do I have to inform my loaner before trading? Is it able to be a hand-off process, like when I'm ready to buy we just swap keys and I'm good? How do I make sure I'm not getting scammed in the value of my Civic (she's got a few scratches and a very minor dent that makes me worried about her value)? I can be a pushover and just say yes when I feel overwhelmed, so dealerships are already a lot for me. Any advice would be super helpful!
