Stupid fucking thought but I just saw a satire video about the latest ai Silicon Valley chud to “blow the whistle” and “go public” about the supposedly real and present danger of the technology they dedicated themselves to constructing (until it felt weird)

And it occurred to me that they’re not even in it for personal or practical reasons,: it’s purely theological: they’re stuck in their fucking sophomoric logic trap of “the singularity is coming and I need to be on the right side of History” but of course lacking any sense of material reality or just even a child’s understanding of what the world looks like or how it is constructed.

Just actually afraid of an ai apocalypse (Matrix, March 31, 1999) that will never happen, and seeking an advanced kind of absolution. They want to be able to tell fully unlocked Omega Keanu Reeves that they really did their best. Don’t do your weird stationary martial arts on me—I’m one of the good ones.

It’s been ages since I’ve felt sympathy or even pity for the tech bros of the world, but this one got a chuckle out of me, anyway. It’s so human and silly.
