Ndu
Hey everyone!
I’m currently a student at National Defence University (NDU), Islamabad, and I’ve noticed that many prospective students have questions about NDU, especially regarding admissions, academics, social life, facilities, and overall university life.
So I thought I’d make a post answering some common questions from a current student’s perspective.
If you’re considering NDU, hopefully this clears up some of your doubts.
1. How is the social life at NDU?
Honestly, I’d say the social life is average, but it depends a lot on the individual.
The university usually organizes festivals, events, MUNs, seminars, and other activities where you can socialize and meet people.
So, if you’re willing to participate and interact, you can have a good social experience. It ultimately depends on how much you choose to socialize.
2. What happens during the first month at NDU?
During the first month, your fee slip can serve as your ID until your official university ID card is issued.
You’ll also get your AcadMax login credentials, which you’ll use for registered courses, fee-related information, academic records, and other student-related matters.
3. What is AcadMax used for?
AcadMax is the academic management system used for student-related information.
You’ll use it for things like:
Registered courses
Academic records
Fee-related information
Results and other academic details
You’ll receive or create your login credentials according to the university’s process.
4. How many weeks are there in a semester, and what is the attendance requirement?
A semester generally consists of 16 weeks.
From my experience, 75% attendance is mandatory, so attendance is something you should take seriously.
5. How are exams structured at NDU?
Generally, there are two major exams:
One midterm
One final exam
The midterm is usually around the 8th week of the semester.
6. How long are classes at NDU?
It depends on the course and credit hours.
Classes can be around 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the subject.
Overall, once you get used to your timetable, the academic routine is fairly manageable.
7. How is the study environment at NDU?
Personally, I find the environment peaceful and suitable for studying.
Studies are good, classes are generally well managed, and the faculty is one of the strong points.
If you’re looking for a university with a peaceful academic environment, NDU is definitely worth considering.
8. What is the faculty like?
In my experience, the faculty is quite good and well qualified.
You’ll find professors and lecturers with strong academic backgrounds, especially in fields related to International Relations, Strategic Studies, Political Science, Economics, Peace and Conflict Studies, etc.
9. What kind of students and people will I meet at NDU?
One of the best things about NDU is the network you can build.
You get to meet students from different parts of Pakistan and different educational and social backgrounds.
Over the years, this can become a really useful network.
So don’t just focus on your own class. Try to get to know people from other departments as well.
10. What sports facilities are available at NDU?
There are different sports facilities available, including:
Basketball
Futsal
Cricket
Other sports and recreational activities
The Margalla Sports Complex is also a major recreational facility associated with NDU.
11. Where can students hang out at NDU?
There are several places around campus where students can sit, eat, and chill between classes.
Some of the known spots include:
Scholar Café
CSD
Bakery Shop
Dining areas
Other campus cafés and shops
So you won’t be sitting in the classroom all day 😭.
12. What other facilities are available at NDU?
Apart from academic facilities, there are facilities such as:
Library
Sports facilities
Medical/hospital facility
Parks and open spaces
Dining facilities
Shops and cafés
Overall, the campus has a peaceful environment and decent facilities for students.
13. Is NDU only about military and defence studies?
No.
This is a common misconception.
NDU has several academic departments and programs, including fields such as:
International Relations
Strategic Studies
Peace and Conflict Studies
Government and Public Policy
Leadership and Management Studies
Economics
So, it’s not only about military studies.
14. Is NDU open only to military students?
No. NDU has civilian students as well.
There are students from different backgrounds, and you’ll get the opportunity to interact with people from across Pakistan.
15. When does NDU take admissions?
NDU offers admissions in different academic sessions.
Admission dates, eligibility, and requirements can change, so always check the official NDU website for the latest information.
16. Is NDU a good choice for International Relations and related fields?
If you’re interested in International Relations, Strategic Studies, Peace and Conflict, Government and Public Policy, or related fields, NDU is definitely an option worth considering.
The environment is particularly suitable if you’re interested in:
Politics
International affairs
Diplomacy
Security studies
Strategic affairs
Overall verdict from my personal experience
NDU has a peaceful environment, good academics, good faculty, decent social life, sports facilities, and—probably most importantly—a diverse student network from across Pakistan.
But don’t expect it to be exactly like a typical private university where social life is happening 24/7.
Your experience depends a lot on how much you participate, make friends, and take advantage of university activities.
I’m posting this because I see a lot of prospective students asking the same questions repeatedly.
If you’re considering NDU, drop your questions below. I’ll try to answer them based on my experience as a current student.
Ask away! 🇵🇰
