How do people in Kerala usually handle financial responsibilities towards parents after marriage?
I’m trying to understand how people generally deal with this, especially when the parents have existing financial problems or debts before their son gets married.
After marriage, if the son moves out and starts living separately with his wife, is it generally expected that he should still take responsibility for his parents’ debts and financial problems? Or is it more common to give them a fixed amount every month and keep the rest of the couple’s finances separate?
I’m also wondering how people handle it when the wife is not comfortable with the husband taking on his parents’ debts, especially when those debts were caused by decisions the parents made themselves. Does the husband normally continue helping regardless, or is this something the couple should decide together?
I’m asking specifically from a Kerala/Malayali family perspective because I feel expectations around parents and marriage can be quite different here compared with other places. I’d be interested in hearing different perspectives on what is considered reasonable after marriage.
