Does having 3 years of STEM OPT actually make employers more willing to hire you?
I’m studying Business Administration at USC, which is STEM-designated, so I’ll be eligible for up to 3 years of OPT after graduation.
I’m wondering how much of a difference this makes from an employer’s perspective compared with someone who only has 1 year of OPT. With one year, the company has a pretty short window to evaluate you before having to consider H-1B sponsorship. With three years, they have much more time to see your performance, invest in you, and potentially promote you before making that decision.
In my case, there’s also the USC brand and the Trojan Network, which I imagine could help, especially in business and particularly in LA. But I honestly don’t know how much of a difference any of this makes in practice.
For those who have actually gone through this: does having 3 years of OPT meaningfully improve your chances of getting hired or eventually getting H-1B sponsorship?
