Eligibility timeline question for German citizenship as a Canadian working holiday visa vs. residence permit start date
Hey everyone, hoping someone here has dealt with this specific situation or knows the rules well enough to point me in the right direction.
Quick rundown of my visa history in Germany:
Came over in July 2020 on a regular tourist visa. In October 2020 I switched to a working holiday visa (1 year). I was doing German classes at the VHS at that point, didn't actually start working until Jan/Feb 2021. Then in March 2021 I landed a job that let me tie my visa to the employer, switched over to that before the WHV ran out. Stayed on that until 2023(On job switch but valid visa during the transfer) when I started an Ausbildung, at which point my visa converted to an Ausbildungsvisum. Finished the Ausbildung in August 2026. I also got married in June 2026, so right before the Ausbildung visa would've expired I switched to a spousal visa instead. Since then I've been working full time with an unbefristeter Vertrag.
So here's what I can't figure out: for the "unbefristetes oder auf Dauer angelegtes Aufenthaltsrecht" requirement, does my clock start back in October 2020 when I got the working holiday visa (even though I wasn't employed yet), or does it only really start once I began working in Jan/March 2021? Not sure if the WHV period even counts toward this at all since it's not an integration-focused visa in the first place.
Also, a couple things I've seen mentioned but can't confirm:
- Something about needing a minimum number of months paying into pension/social security, on top of the general residence time requirement?
- People saying Ausbildung time only counts partway toward the residency clock, like for a 3-year apprenticeship only half of it counts? Not sure if that's actually true or depends on the specific permit you had during the Ausbildung.
If anyone's been through something similar, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!
