Why have we still not had a disabled elected MP in modern Singapore politics?
Singapore has had disabled parliamentarians before. Phey Yew Kok served as an MP despite severe hearing and visual impairments. In 1979, he was charged over misuse of union funds.
Then things went completely sideways. Phey jumped bail, fled Singapore by train to Kuala Lumpur and disappeared in Bangkok, remaining a fugitive for 35 years. He eventually returned in 2015 and was jailed.
Chia Yong Yong later became Singapore’s first wheelchair-using parliamentarian. She has peroneal muscular atrophy, a progressive neuromuscular condition, and served as an NMP from 2014 to 2018.
So where are the disabled candidates? Would PAP, WP or any other opposition actually nominate a disabled person for an elected seat, or are we still uncomfortable with disability in politics?
