Before you spend six figures on training, these 5 numbers matter more than the school brochure

The brochure price is not the decision. The decision is whether you can fund the overruns, pass a medical, and live with the first job you are likely to get.

  1. All-in cost. PPL minimums are a fantasy. Use realistic hours, examiner fees, medicals, written tests, and a year of living costs. That is the number.
  2. Time to paid flying. Ratings are not a paycheck. CFI, banner towing, or a long wait after commercial are common. Count months until money comes in.
  3. Medical. Book the medical first. A Class 1 surprise after you have spent $20k is a brutal way to learn.
  4. First job you would actually take. Instructing in a town you do not like, night cargo, or a regional commute. If that life is a no, stop.
  5. Walk-away number. Debt or months after which you would quit. If you cannot name it, you are not ready to sign.

If you want the longer version I put together on cost, timeline, and when it is not worth it, it is on my profile.
