I've been documenting my travels on "polarsteps.com/planetblogger", and Peru is a place where one particular myth seems to hover over the whole eastern edge of the country: **the golden city.** Most people know it under the name **El Dorado,** but the version rooted here is **Paititi** — a lost city said to lie somewhere in the dense rainforest beyond the Andes.

The story I kept hearing goes roughly like this: when the Spanish conquest tore through the Inca empire, some of the last Inca are said to have retreated eastward, carrying their gold with them into the jungle. There, beyond the reach of the invaders, **they founded a hidden city — Paititi — and let the forest close over it.** For centuries it pulled explorers, treasure hunters, and the occasional expedition into the wilderness, and plenty of them never came back. What's striking is that the myth isn't only about riches; it's about a world that chose to disappear rather than be conquered.

**My latest journal follows a route through Peru with that legend in mind.** Each stop pairs photos with a bit of context — where the story of the golden city surfaces, how it's remembered locally, and how the line between Inca history and treasure legend blurs the closer you get to the forest. **It's part travel route, part attempt to follow a myth toward the green wall where it supposedly hides.**

If you're into the places behind the myths — the actual ground a legend grew out of — **this might be worth a look.** I'd also love to hear other tellings, since the Paititi story tangles with El Dorado and a dozen regional variants, and I'm sure people here know versions I didn't come across.
