Writing my first story — does simple language still hit? Honest feedback needed

Feedback requested

First time writing fiction. I've been working on a slow-burn YA romance set in a classroom — two main POVs, quiet characters, a lot left unsaid between them.

My biggest fear is that my writing is too simple. Not enough complexity in the language. Not sophisticated enough for the story I'm trying to tell.

But then I look at passages like this and I genuinely can't tell anymore:

"The house was never silent. Voices moved from room to room. Clinks of steel echoed whenever the kitchen vessels met each other. Laughter rose, fell, and disappeared into conversations that didn't need endings.

Always full of noises. And yet, somewhere within all those noises, there were spaces where I felt… missing.

I didn't notice it at first. You don't question love when you're a child. You assume it's there. Even when it feels different.

Not through words. Through absence.

No one ever said I was less. But no one made me feel like I was enough either."

Does this feel emotionally immersive? Does the simplicity pull you out — or pull you in?
