Burnt out and emotional towards start of mat leave
Hello fellow working mums. Not sure what I’m trying to say here, any advice appreciated or friendly ears otherwise welcome. I am in a senior leadership position at an organisation and about to go on mat leave with my second week after next. I feel extremely burnt out and tired after having gone through a very tumultuous period in this role (not to do with me but I did have to lead my team through this), whilst working an oppressive workload and managing a successful grievance against a former director and am at a low level of resilience compared to normal. Whilst I have come out the other side with a very good reputation, I an exhausted and definitely have a lower threshold for BS than usual.
A few weeks ago I cried to my boss and then yesterday I nearly burst into tears in the middle of a management meeting yesterday after having had a really tough week juggling full time work with looking after my eldest who was unwell. I felt very upset after a peer I normally get on okay with made a couple of thoughtless comments in front of my director when I said I wouldn’t have capacity to progress new work before heading off which felt undermining, insensitive and condescending. My eyes welled up and she called me out on it and I just said I was tired. I carried on in the meeting as normal after and my director came in to my office separately to ask if I was okay after and I reiterated that I was just tired and trying to wrap things up properly after a stressful and shit week. I keep veering between worrying if I’ve come across unprofessional and not caring anymore as frankly i feel like i an approaching being ‘done’ there.
Have others felt like this before finishing up at work? Have I come across as unprofessional for showing emotion? I don’t think the rest of the management team understand as they don’t have children (and tbh I don’t think like children as have made some backhanded / naive comments about them) and have no idea what it’s like working when pregnant, let alone full time and with another kid. I don’t know if I’m conflating being pregnant and burnt out after a really crap period with hating my job and not wanting to go back.
