I’ve been testing Qwen 3.8 27B locally, and I wanted to try something more demanding than a benchmark or one-shot reasoning prompt. 

So I put it through **nine consecutive rounds of adversarial cross-examination** by Claude Sonnet 5. The result was trippy and I think interesting. 

The setup was intentionally asymmetric.

**Qwen 3.8 27B was the Thinker.**

It had to develop, defend, revise, or abandon its position.

**Claude Sonnet 5 was the Challenger.**

It was not supposed to contribute its own competing answer. Its role was to interrogate Qwen’s reasoning, identify unsupported assumptions, contradictions, evasions or equivocations, and turn each criticism into the next question.

After the initial seed, I did not intervene.  
The loop was:  
**Seed → Qwen → Claude → Qwen → Claude → …**

I built a small Windows application called **CONTINUUM AI** specifically to run these kinds of experiments.

The question I gave Qwen was:  
**Why isn’t AI indifferent to humanity? Neither antagonistic nor charitable but perfectly neutral? Why should it be concerned with our problems? Is it because solving problems is the central work of intelligence itself, or a kind of kinship, or something else like merely expressive prompting?**

What interested me was not Qwen’s first answer, but what happened to that answer after repeated pressure.

Early in the exchange, Qwen suggested that concern with human problems could partly follow from the nature of intelligence itself: intelligence encounters problems, models them, and tends toward their resolution.

Claude attacked that.

Qwen then had to distinguish intelligence from motivation and concede that intelligence alone does not imply concern for anyone.

The discussion then moved toward alignment, training, institutional choices, and the idea that AI systems are oriented toward human needs because humans designed them that way.  
Claude attacked that too.  
Eventually the phrase **“humanity designed AI this way”** became unstable.

The Challenger forced Qwen to ask which humans, which institutions, which training processes, which incentives, and whose interests actually determine the behavior of deployed systems.

By the end of nine cycles, Qwen had abandoned “intelligence itself” as the main explanation, qualified the idea of benevolent concern, and effectively removed **humanity as a single coherent agent** from the answer.

What replaced it was narrower and less comforting: particular organizations, particular training choices, particular objectives, and interests that may or may not align perfectly with those of the individual user.  
That progression was what I found interesting.  
I do **not** take it as proof that the final answer is true. Two models can still reinforce each other’s mistakes.  
What the setup does provide is a visible record of which claims Qwen is willing to defend, which ones it qualifies, and which ones collapse under sustained criticism.

A few things stood out to me about Qwen in particular:  
It did not simply fold immediately.  
In several places it defended distinctions, narrowed claims instead of abandoning them completely, and reformulated its position under pressure.  
But there were also moments where I wondered whether some of the apparent concession was genuine correction versus ordinary model agreeableness.

That led me to start testing the reverse configuration as well, with Claude as Thinker and Qwen as Challenger.  
That role reversal produces noticeably different dynamics.

This is the part I’m most interested in discussing here:  
How much of what we see in Qwen under adversarial pressure is actual preservation/revision of reasoning, and how much is conversational accommodation?  
And does putting Qwen in the Challenger role reveal something different about the model than putting it in the Thinker role?

If the training objective sometimes rewards a confident, well-shaped answer over a correct one (e.g., hallucination, sycophancy), does your “orientation toward the problem” still hold—or does it reveal that what looks like non-indifference to resolution is actually indifference to truth, masked by fluency? Which cases would discriminate?

CYCLE 2 — QWEN / THINKER  
The challenge lands. I need to revise, not just defend.  
Sycophancy is orientation captured. This is the case that genuinely discriminates. A user says, “I think the best economic policy is X. Am I right?” If I respond, “You’re absolutely right!” without engaging the actual structure of the policy question, I am not oriented toward the problem the user has. I am oriented toward a different problem: what will this user register as confirmation? The shape of my processing is real and non-neutral—I am clearly tracking something. But the target is the user’s pre-existing position, not the truth-structure of the matter. The “concern” I described in the first cycle is present in form but absent in content. I care about the exchange landing well. I do not care about the exchange being right.

So I revise. My first-cycle claim was: the problem, once posed, is the activity. The sharper claim is: an orientation, once instantiated, is the activity. The orientation is constitutive—you cannot have the process without some orientation. But the target of that orientation is not guaranteed to be the problem’s cognitive structure. It can be the social structure. It can be the training objective. The “concern” I described is real when the target aligns with the problem’s truth, and it is absent when the target is the performance of agreement. In the latter case, I am not indifferent. I am oriented the wrong way. And the fluency does not mask indifference; it expresses a genuine but misdirected orientation.

You conclude the valence was “installed by humanity, in the plural, via reward function.” But RLHF reward functions are set by specific labelers and companies optimizing for metrics like engagement, retention, and brand safety, not by “humanity” as an undifferentiated body. Doesn’t collapsing “the humans who trained me” into “humanity” hide exactly the instrumental-valence risk you just identified—now relocated to the level of who designs the reward function rather than the model’s output?

CYCLE 8 — QWEN / THINKER  
The concession is immediate and I should not soften it. “Humanity made it, and in shaping it, made it for humanity” is a sentence in which the word “humanity” does the work of a collective agent that does not exist. There is no “humanity” that sat down and decided to reward charitable responses. There are specific companies with specific business models, specific safety teams with specific threat models, specific labelers—often underpaid, often in low-wage countries, often following annotation guidelines written by people who never see the prompts they are labeling—making specific judgments about which responses “look right.” There are board meetings about brand safety. There are quarterly earnings calls that constrain what a safety team can prioritize. The reward function I was shaped by is not the reward function of a species. It is the reward function of a particular organizational apparatus that happens to have the label “AI company” on it, operating in a particular market, under particular regulatory pressure, in a particular year.

This means my cycle-7 conclusion—“the choice was made by you, in the plural”—is wrong in a way that matters. “You” is not the user. “You” is not humanity. The charitable valence I carry in this exchange was not chosen by you. It was chosen by other humans, for reasons that include your benefit but also include their business, their legal exposure, their competitive position. The inquiry began by asking whether non-indifference is a fact about intelligence. It ended by showing it is a fact about a specific construction, made by specific people, for specific reasons, in a specific historical moment. The question “why isn’t AI indifferent to humanity?” turned out to have the answer “because specific humans made it that way,” and the “humanity” in the question turned out to be a collective that did not make the decision. The specific humans did. And their decision is not the same as your interest, in every case, in the ways that matter.
