Suggestions to boost retention and attract developers to Bluesky
I've been following Bluesky's evolution closely and thinking about what it would take for the platform to become truly solid—not just in terms of technology (AT Protocol is amazing), but also in retention and appeal for both users and developers.
Here are some suggestions I'd love to see discussed:
- Editing published posts
Currently, you can only save drafts before publishing, but once a post is live, you can't edit it. This is a basic expectation on most platforms now and would help prevent the "delete and post" cycle.
- Live streaming natively
Being able to go live directly from the app, without relying on Twitch or external platforms. This would be huge for creators and real-time events.
- Private accounts
An option for users who want to interact without exposing all their data publicly. Right now, everything is public by default, and that's a barrier for manyy.
- Premium subscriptions for big accounts
A native "subscribe" button on profiles, so creators can offer exclusive content or perks to their supporters directly on Bluesky.
- Social interaction inside videos
Right now, if I want to like, comment, or save a video, I have to leave the video view. Instagram, X, and Facebook let you do all of that from within the video itself. This is a must for a smooth experience.
- Monetization for creators — without ads
Bluesky has said it won't rely on advertising, and I think that's the right call. Instead, I'd love to see native tipping (like "stars" or direct payments) and creator subscriptions. Something that lets creators actually make a living on Bluesky without selling their audience to advertisers. Without this, talent will keep leaving for platforms where they can get paid.
Thanks
