we all know good setting-agnostic wargames. what about the opposite? what are some wargames with rules that go ALL IN on a specific setting or kind of warfare?
this might sound like a bit of an odd question, but recently I was discussing rulesets with a friend for making pulp-style car chases. I was thinking about options (necromunda? gaslands?), and just generally thinking about games which are really dedicated to a very specific kind of combat., for example, blood and thunder, which is specifically based on people fighting each other between boats. that's a very specific vibe, and one that's hard to recreate. i was also thinking about the goofier fanmade settings for mordheim, and how they try to recreate fighting between slippery docks or carriage chases and the like. marvel crisis protocol is another example, with the characters chucking terrain at each other. there's a lot of games out there that ultimately boil down to a handful of foot troops duking it out over fairly uninteresting terrain, with the occasional tank or monster to soak up bullets/arrows. lord knows I love that, but I'm curious about what else is out there.
also just to clarify: I'm not necessarily asking about how interesting the setting itself is. trench crusade, while a very cool setting, doesn't necessarily have rules that reflect trench fighting (no weapon nests or artillery strikes, for example!). Doom 1490, on the other hand, has a pretty simple setting (grimdark medieval) but all the rules are based around climbing up and gain high ground.
anyways, what are some games that go very all-in on their chosen setting? really dynamic boards, ultra-specific units, weird victory conditions, that kind of thing.
