Removing my IUD fixed my "PMDD"
If you have a hormonal IUD and mood issues, I hope this story helps you.
I had a Kyleena IUD inserted in 2024. I developed intense PMDD-like symptoms soon after insertion. I would get extremely anxious, emotionally volatile, and paranoid during my luteal phase. I would spontaneously burst into tears and had problems interacting with people from anxiety. The emotional side effects were most significant but I also had awful cramping through my whole cycle for the first ~6mo after insertion.
I started taking magnesium, vitamin B and zinc in early 2026 after reading more about PMS/PMDD. After a few months I believe this reduced my period cramps intensity but it did nothing for mood.
I finally had my IUD removed over the summer. After three cycles, I can safely conclude that my PMDD-like symptoms have almost entirely resolved. I still experience some PMS mood issues (notably irritability) but it's for a much shorter duration (~3 days before period) and much less intense.
The IUD gave me extremely adverse mood issues. I now use barrier methods and cycle tracking. If you have cycle related mood issues and a hormonal IUD, I strongly recommend looking into alternative birth control methods.
