I think OP designed the main characters to perfectly encapsulate the hell of being in a love as a young person and trying to figure out what the relationship is “supposed” to do for either of you.

The girlfriend is the kind of person to feel loved whenever somebody perfectly understands their ideas, beliefs, hopes, interests, whatever. I don’t think that this is a bad thing to want in a relationship. To truly love her is to at least understand what she truly is.

The boyfriend IS NOT like her at all in this sense. The boyfriend is the type to feel loved when somebody hugs him, shares a meal with him, engages in the tiny pleasantries of life with him. This isn’t wrong either. For someone who isn’t experiencing the soul sucking desire to be affirmed and understood in every nuanced way, he doesn’t have an instinct to do more for her than material things like taking care of her, or having a conversation about his day, or sharing something he found funny.

Ignoring the fact that finding someone who DOES understand you is so difficult, it’s also difficult to understand that this is what’s happening within yourself.

How can I feel so dissatisfied in life when all my material needs are taken care of? Why do I still feel not loved? I have what a good relationship is “supposed” to look like, and yet I want more. Who am I to be demanding these things when I’m not even worth shit?

I like this depiction of the overthinking, self-hate death spiral. Being human is about being a messy, ugly, beautiful, good, evil, piece of shit. And to her, love is about having somebody else see you as all of that. I don’t think she’s wrong for that, but the comic warns about how failing to properly deconstruct yourself will lead to the dehumanization of the people around you. The comic implies that all of these emotions will eventually reach a boiling point where she will unleash this cruelty upon the person who has been so kind to her.
