We compared Aider and Octomind for real agent work — an honest breakdown

Disclosure up front: we make Octomind at Muvon, so read this comparison with that bias in mind. We still tried to write it honestly.

We spent time comparing Aider with Octomind for running AI coding agents. Aider is excellent at one thing: point it at a repo, talk through a change, and every AI edit becomes a real Git commit you can inspect or undo. Git-native, BYO keys, works with almost any LLM including local models, mature and scriptable, Apache-2.0. If you want a terminal pair programmer that respects your history, Aider is the better tool.

Where the two differ is runtime. Aider is a terminal session on your laptop. Octomind is an open-source agent runtime: one binary, any model, MCP-native, running in the terminal, in CI, or as a daemon. One of its modes is a persistent Linux machine with Docker, saved sessions, connectors (Telegram, Slack, WhatsApp, GitHub), and scheduled Routines — so the agent keeps working when your laptop is closed. Also Apache-2.0, 36 hosted models with mid-session /model switching.

One thing worth knowing: Aider is effectively in maintenance mode (last stable v0.86.2, Feb 2026). That's not a death sentence — mature tools stay useful for years — but if you're betting on active development, it's a factor.

Honest conclusion: Aider is the better Git pair programmer; Octomind is the better fit when the agent must become a persistent service. You can keep both.
