Agnes and Becca dicussion
A bit of backstory: I finished the finale right when it aired, but I’m only now coming across online discussions about Becka and Agnes’s kiss and what it actually meant.
Personally, I view the kiss as genuine romance and would strongly push back against the idea that it was just a pity kiss. Looking at it from Agnes’s point of view, this season heavily emphasized the brutal consequences of being labeled a "gender traitor." Agnes grew up in a system where stepping that far out of line meant swift, severe punishment. Sure, we’ve seen her subtly defy Gilead’s rules before, but those were low-risk infractions that could cost her a finger, her tongue, not her life on the Wall. She wouldn't risk execution for a mere act of pity; she put her life on the line because the feelings were real.
It's also crucial to remember the psychological framing here. Neither of these girls had the space to safely explore or even recognize their attraction, given that Gilead deeply ingrains the idea that such feelings are a damnable sin. For Agnes, romance with another woman likely felt like something that wasn't even remotely on the table as an option.
As for Garth, I haven't seen many people share my perspective on how he fits into the picture. I believe Agnes genuinely likes him, too. It’s entirely natural for someone to hold feelings for two people at once. While I have very little love for the men of Gilead in general, I think Agnes has a real crush on him. That said, I don't think her feelings for Garth are nearly as deep as what she feels for Becka. Her bond with Becka reads as "Storge"a deep, foundational affection born of shared trauma and companionship that gradually transitions into a delayed realization of romantic love, serving as a classic friends-to-lovers arc forged within a dystopian pressure cooker.
