I genuinely don’t know what to do
Title: I secretly got married 1.5 years ago because I wanted to keep my relationship halal, and now my mother wants me to come home — I genuinely don’t know what to do
I really need some outside perspective because I’m in an extremely complicated situation and I genuinely don’t know what the right thing to do is.
I got married to my husband about 1.5 years ago. The reason we got married was because we genuinely wanted to be together in a halal way, but we knew our parents would most likely create a lot of problems and delay everything indefinitely.
I come from a very restrictive family. Growing up, I wasn’t even allowed to have social media. I met my husband online, so if I had tried to introduce him to my family back then, they would have immediately questioned where I met him, why I was on social media, who I was talking to, etc. I was living under my family’s control at the time, so I didn’t really have a safe way to navigate that situation.
I eventually came to Malaysia to pursue my university degree. I was 20 at the time. Since I wanted to avoid having a haram relationship, I decided that marriage was the better option. My parents are separated, and my biological father is not in contact with my mother, so I was able to involve him in the marriage. From my understanding, that allowed me to marry in a halal manner while avoiding a situation where my mother would immediately reject the marriage before even knowing my husband.
Fast forward 1.5 years. I’m now 22, and I finally felt ready to introduce my husband to my mother. Obviously, I couldn’t just drop the bomb and say, “Surprise, I’ve been married for 1.5 years.” So I introduced him as a “potential” and gradually let them communicate.
Honestly, things were going pretty well.
My mother had some doubts, which I expected, but they were talking and getting to know each other. I even met my husband’s mother about two weeks ago when she came to the country I’m studying in, and that went relatively well too.
Then my husband and I had a disagreement.
My husband has always been worried about some of the people around me at university. Some of my friends have done things that he considers bad influences, and I have always told him that I know my boundaries and that just being around people who make different choices does not mean I participate in those things.
During our disagreement, however, he contacted my mother and told her about some of these things.
He also told her about private things I had told him about my relationship with my mother — including how she puts pressure on me regarding Quran memorization and how I sometimes feel very restricted by her parenting.
These were things I had shared with him privately. I had never given him permission to tell my mother.
There was also something else that really upset me: I have repeatedly told him not to interfere in my relationship with my mother. I have been extremely clear about this boundary because I know my mother. I have lived with her for 22 years. I know how she interprets messages, what makes her worried, what makes her angry, and what kinds of things will cause her to become more protective.
My husband obviously doesn't know her the way I do.
But he still decided to intervene because he genuinely thought he was helping me.
He believes I listen to everything my mother says, and he thought that if he talked to her directly, maybe they could communicate and she would understand his concerns. He also has strong opinions about me going out to cafes and malls because he believes women shouldn't be going out excessively. Coincidentally, my mother has similar views, so he apparently thought this could even become a point of agreement or bonding between them.
Instead, everything completely blew up.
My mother now thinks this “potential” is a terrible person because, in her eyes, he has already gone behind my back and revealed private information before they are even officially considering marriage. Her perspective is basically: if he is willing to reveal secrets and criticize my parenting now, what is he going to do after marriage?
My father also became involved and told me that this man is not suitable for me. At one point they were even calling him a psychopath because of how he handled the situation.
I don't want to defend everything my husband did. I genuinely think he crossed a huge boundary, and I was so upset that I sent him a goodbye message because I was thinking that maybe this relationship simply wasn't going to work. I would rather end things before the situation between our families became even more complicated.
But at the same time, I know my husband. I don't believe his intention was to hurt me or sabotage me. He genuinely thought he was helping. He has apologized, and although he makes mistakes and sometimes doesn't understand the consequences of his actions, I still love him.
And now comes the part that scares me the most.
My mother is increasingly worried about me staying in Malaysia. She believes that the university environment is exposing me to bad influences and that free-mixing at university is dangerous for me. She has been reading Islamic rulings about this and is now considering whether I should come home and pursue an online degree instead.
I have two years left of my degree.
I absolutely do not want to do an online degree.
And I absolutely do not want to move back home.
I know that probably sounds horrible, but my mother's parenting is extremely restrictive. At home, I don't have the level of independence I have here. I can't simply wake up when I want, eat what I want, go somewhere without asking, or use my phone whenever I want. There are restrictions around almost everything.
For me, going back home would feel like losing the independence I've finally had for the first time in my life.
And realistically, if I go back, I don't think I will be able to simply come back to Malaysia later. My education, my independence, and essentially the life I've built here would be over.
My mother is also afraid that if this “potential” gets rejected, he could potentially harm me. The irony is that she doesn't know that he is actually my husband, so from her perspective he's just some man who might become angry after being rejected.
So now I am trapped in an incredibly bizarre situation where the person she is worried about is actually my husband.
And the only way I can fully explain why I am so desperate to stay in Malaysia would be to reveal the marriage.
I genuinely don't know whether revealing it now would make everything ten times worse.
I also don't want to be a disrespectful daughter. I love my mother. I don't want to hurt her. I don't want her to feel like everything she did for me was worthless. I don't want to deliberately rebel against my parents.
At the same time, I cannot realistically give up my education and return to a life where I feel completely controlled.
I feel like I'm being forced to choose between my parents and my husband, when the situation is much more complicated than that.
My current plan is to buy myself a little time. I have to submit my passport for renewal tomorrow, which could potentially give me around two weeks before I have to make any major decision. I could use that time to let everyone calm down and hopefully talk to my mother more rationally.
But I also feel guilty because I would technically be using the passport renewal as a way to delay going home, knowing exactly why I'm doing it.
I don't know what the right thing is anymore.
I still love my husband. I know he has made serious mistakes, and I'm not trying to excuse them. But I also don't think he's some evil person. He genuinely thought he was doing something good, even though he completely misunderstood the consequences and crossed a boundary I had repeatedly set.
At the same time, I don't want to blindly stay with him just because I'm terrified of going home. That's another thing I'm worried about — whether I'm making decisions about my marriage based on fear of my family rather than because the marriage itself is healthy.
So, Reddit, what would you do in my position?
How do I handle my mother without completely destroying her trust in me?
Should I reveal the marriage now, or try to buy time and calm everyone down first?
How do I protect my education and independence without being disrespectful to my parents?
And, perhaps most importantly, how do I figure out whether my marriage is actually worth fighting for when my alternative feels like losing the life I've built?
I would really appreciate perspectives from Muslims, people who have dealt with controlling/restrictive parents, or anyone who has been in a similar situation. Please don't just tell me “divorce him” or “obey your parents” — I know those are the obvious answers people will give, and I'm genuinely looking for advice on how to navigate the situation step by step.
