SPOILERS: Episode 7 Ending Just Killed the Season for Me 👎
I genuinely don’t understand what happened to the writing in the ending of Episode 7.
This isn’t about Sampson dying. Kill him. Give him a heroic death. Make it devastating. I’m completely fine with that.
My problem is that, in order to create that dramatic ending, the writers suddenly made both the supposedly sophisticated villains AND Reacher behave like idiots.
And after spending an entire season establishing how intelligent these people are, that completely took me out of the show.
There are two huge problems.
- Their choice of suicide bomber makes absolutely no sense.
Think about the event they are infiltrating.
It’s a political fundraiser filled overwhelmingly with older white people.
And their brilliant plan is to bring in a young Black African man from Djibouti, dress him in clothing that already makes him stand out from most of the crowd, put a giant backpack on him, and have him walking around visibly nervous?
Seriously?
Before somebody deliberately misunderstands this: this has nothing to do with thinking a Black person is inherently suspicious.
It is about blending into the specific environment you are infiltrating.
If this were an event overwhelmingly attended by young Black people, sending an older white guy who obviously didn’t fit the crowd would be equally stupid.
If you are secretly planting a suicide bomber inside an event, the entire point should be to make him disappear into the background.
You choose somebody who looks like he belongs there.
Instead, they chose somebody who visually stands out from most of the attendees, gave him a large backpack, and then had him behave nervously enough that Sampson could identify him without even having his picture.
And these are supposed to be highly intelligent criminals running an international operation?
They can move people across countries.
They have killers.
They have money.
They have weapons.
They have contacts.
They can manipulate people, cover tracks and organize a chemical attack.
But when it comes to the MOST IMPORTANT PERSON in the entire operation, they apparently couldn't find a single committed operative who would blend naturally into the crowd?
Yes, I understand the show's explanation that Waberi is a true believer willing to sacrifice himself.
Fine.
That explains why he is willing to die.
It does NOT explain why he is the only possible person who can do it.
We're supposed to believe an international criminal organization capable of everything we've watched all season had exactly ONE person willing to carry out this mission, and unfortunately he happens to be someone who stands out at the target event?
Come on.
Then there’s the security situation.
Apparently someone kills the security guard so Waberi can get inside.
Okay.
But then you leave the dead security guard lying there?
So your carefully planned covert attack includes a murdered security officer sitting around waiting for somebody to discover him and realize security has been compromised?
The villains have spent the season being presented as sophisticated, calculated and dangerous.
Then suddenly their master plan starts looking like something people came up with five minutes before the fundraiser.
But somehow, Reacher's behavior is even worse.
- Episode 7 completely breaks Reacher's established intelligence.
This is where the episode completely lost me.
For four seasons, Reacher has been established as almost freakishly analytical.
He notices things everyone else misses.
He studies behavior.
He calculates distances.
He predicts reactions.
He analyzes threats.
He thinks several moves ahead.
His size and strength are only half of what makes the character interesting.
The other half is that there is basically a supercomputer running inside this gigantic man's head.
And look at what Reacher knows during this scene:
There is a suicide bomber.
He is carrying a chemical weapon capable of killing an enormous number of people.
He has a trigger.
If he realizes he has been discovered, he can press it instantly.
Sampson is already inside.
And Sampson literally tells Reacher:
“I found him.”
So the target has already been located.
Someone already has eyes on him.
The bomber apparently DOES NOT KNOW he has been identified.
This situation requires calm.
Stealth.
Coordination.
Absolutely NOTHING that could alert the bomber.
And what does Reacher, supposedly one of the smartest and most tactically experienced people in the show, decide to do?
He comes charging through security like the fucking Hulk.
He creates a commotion.
Security reacts.
People react.
The bomber realizes something is wrong.
He reaches for the trigger.
And now Sampson has to tackle him into the river and sacrifice himself.
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?
This isn't Reacher making an understandable mistake because he lacked information.
HE HAD THE INFORMATION.
He knew exactly what kind of threat they were dealing with.
He knew the bomber could detonate the weapon instantly.
He knew Sampson had already located him.
He knew the bomber hadn't been alerted yet.
And his tactical solution was apparently:
MAKE A HUGE FUCKING COMMOTION AND RUN STRAIGHT INTO THE SITUATION.
That is not Jack Reacher.
Reacher uses brute force all the time. Obviously.
But normally the entire appeal of the character is:
Observe. Analyze. Calculate. THEN destroy everybody.
Episode 7 apparently changed that to:
RUN, REACHER, RUN!
And what makes it even worse is that the episode itself understands the importance of not alarming the bomber.
The characters literally discuss avoiding panic and not doing anything that could trigger him.
Then apparently Reacher forgets that entire concept moments later.
That is why this ending feels so manufactured to me.
It feels like the writers started with:
“We want Sampson to die heroically.”
Okay.
Then they needed Waberi to realize he'd been discovered.
So they needed somebody to cause a disturbance.
And instead of coming up with a believable reason, they made Reacher himself cause it.
So now we have two groups of highly intelligent people suddenly becoming stupid in the same sequence.
The villains become stupid so the bomber can be identified.
Then Reacher becomes stupid so the bomber can be triggered.
All because the writers needed Sampson's heroic sacrifice to happen.
That's not tragedy created naturally by the story.
That's the writers moving characters around like chess pieces until they reach the dramatic scene they already decided they wanted.
And there were a hundred better ways to get exactly the same ending.
Waberi could notice Sampson watching him.
Another guest could accidentally expose him.
Security could identify him.
Another operative could warn him.
Someone could scream.
Sampson could make one tiny mistake.
Something completely unpredictable could happen.
ANYTHING.
Then Sampson realizes there is no time, tackles Waberi into the river, saves everyone and dies a hero.
Same sacrifice.
Same tragedy.
Same emotional ending.
WITHOUT making both the villains and Reacher suddenly lose 80 IQ points.
That's what killed the episode for me.
I can forgive unrealistic action.
I can forgive Reacher beating up ten people.
I can forgive ridiculous coincidences.
It's an action show.
But when your story depends on supposedly highly intelligent characters suddenly becoming stupid because otherwise your dramatic ending cannot happen, that's different.
The villains' master plan makes no sense.
Reacher's response makes even less sense.
And after spending four seasons building Reacher as a man whose greatest weapon is arguably his brain, Episode 7 basically unplugged it when the plot needed him to do something stupid.
Honestly, it killed so much of my excitement for Season 4 that right now I don't even feel motivated to watch the finale.
Am I missing something here, or did Episode 7 completely sacrifice logic for drama?
