Is not taking an interest in my passions a dealbreaker?
I 24M have been in a relationship with my girlfriend
24F for approximately 10 months.
We’ve been fairly rocky since the start to be honest but we love each other very much. There has been a pattern for a while now of inconsideration from her towards my feelings and making me not truly feel like a priority in her life.
Yes, she still wants to hang out all the time, she’s not blowing me off or anything. It’s more along the lines of when I communicate that something is hurting my feelings or important to me that she’s doing or not doing, she rarely takes accountability for it, validates my feelings, or even really apologizes for it. She tends to say she’ll do better but it seems to fall back into the same old pattern.
A couple examples, I spent about 50 hours working on two birthday gifts for her about 7 months ago. One a canvas hand painted with all of her favorite things, and two, a decorated elk skull that I customized because she loves bones. Both of those she has not put into her room or hung up. They are sitting face down in the garage despite my asking for her to hang them or put them in a spot of meaning. I expressed that it makes me feel like she doesn’t care about them and it kind of hurts my feelings. Anyways she still has not moved them after a few attempts of communicating that.
She goes out with friend a lot which I’m okay with but I will ask for communication throughout the night. I’ve made it clear she doesn’t need to text me every 5 minutes or even every hour but like once or twice throughout the night. She was better with this after a few conversations and then quickly went back to no communication. I brought it up again and she said she’d make it more of a priority. I can appreciate that being said but I also don’t want to beg for consideration with this situation and the one listed above.
My goal in life career wise is to be an author. I'm currently working on my first novel and have been for about 5 months now! At first my girlfriend was excited about it and loved reading the first few chapters and giving me feedback (I asked for it), but recently she couldn't care less about my writing. I sent her an updated version almost 3 months ago and told her I was getting a little stuck on which direction to go and I would really appreciate if she could catch up on it and give me some more feedback. She kept saying she’d get to it or was busy and then months went by without anything. I’d say I asked her over 15 times in 2 months. After it was made extremely clear that she doesn’t want anything to do with it, I stopped talking to her about it. Since then I’ve written another 60ish pages and 5 chapters that she has no idea about. I want to share these successes with her but it takes the joy away when she doesn’t care about them. I’m aware she doesn’t have an obligation to care but as my partner I feel like she should put in effort towards it? If she was really passionate about something, whether I was or wasn’t, I couldn’t imagine not showing support.
After rereading what I’ve written I’m aware i sound insecure with these situations. I don’t feel insecure in the traditional sense I’m more asking myself, do I want a partner for the rest of my life who I have to beg to care in the ways I’m receive it best? I know it’s up to my discretion on if I stay or leave but I’d love some others opinions if yall were in my shoes. Thank you in advance!
