Friends mistreated reactive GSD; Am I overreacting to this?
Guys, I need some perspective here and to make sure I am not making a mountain out of a molehill. So training has been going so well. He’s gone to a dog park, gone to multiple festivals, the park, etc. I have worked tirelessly to get where he is now, on top of thousands of dollars in training. So our friends moved into a new house and invited us over for a small get-together. They live far, and we were coming from an event, so we were just gonna quickly visit and keep doggo in the car. Friend W calls, and we tell him. He goes No, no, no and is adamant that the dogs come into this new place. We’re ofc like ummmm you sure? Like it’s doggo soooo (they know he's been in training). And he’s like yes. Me and hubs think puppy is ready and can handle it. So we get there, and immediately the men (fucking more like boys with how they acted) are not listening to us or respecting the dog’s boundaries. They keep getting in his face, squishing him, petting aggressively, etc., etc. We’re like, don’t do that, please; you need to go slow. Despite this, dog only gets into two barking episodes and quickly self-soothes and puts himself on his pad and starts chewing his cow cheek. I am ofc right at his side, helping him with lots of treats and praise. Will add that there were girls there, and they were so gentle with him—letting him come to them, listening to us on how to interact. It was good, and puppy was going up and kissing their faces with tail wags. Anyways, one of the boys got in puppy’s face and stared hard—you obviously don’t do this with a reactive dog. Puppy barks and backs up. I tell friend not to do this and move puppy to another part of the apartment that was quieter and away from everything. I start playing with him, as this helps him release tension and is what the instructor said to do. Puppy is doing well and calming down. I throw the toy a couple of times, and then two friends see this, and one moves to where I have been throwing the toy; the other was already in a seat there. These are boys, so puppy is wary, but I am proud of him bc he picks the toy up and is going to hand it to one of them to play with him—so proud. This was a huge step. Like so fucking proud. And then they move too quickly and honestly quite aggressively, and he barks and backs up. And this is where I'm raging—the boys bark aggressively in unison, stepping toward puppy, right in his face (they did this bc I think they thought it was supposed to be funny maybe?? idk). Puppy naturally freaks the fuck out and barks back, and then they bark aggressively back at him again. Puppy takes a stance, looking like he is literally ready to attack, and I grab him by the collar and throw him into a bear hug, trying to stay calm, but I'm like, why the hell would you do that to a reactive dog??? I look at Hubs and say this is not working, and we need to get him back into the car NOW. We do, and on the way, I am so fucking mad I start crying. Puppy was being so brave, taking his toy to this unknown man, and was, in his eyes, attacked by this human. I sat in the car for 10 minutes with hubs, and at this point we wanted to leave. Friend W calls, we decline bc we were talking, and then he comes out. Hubs goes to talk to him and basically be like, what you guys did in there was not okay and completely devastating for a reactive dog like this. I come out of the car and cut it short and am like, we’re leaving. Friend W does a very half-assed sorry, making the excuse that we didn’t let people (who are drunk btw, which I did not know; wouldn’t have gone if I did) know in advance how to act with the dog. I'm immediately like, ummm, I don’t bark in dogs' faces?? Don’t roughhouse a very stressed-looking dog?? That is not kind. Didn’t know that needed to be explained, and how this probably set us back weeks. He was just starting to be okay with men. Hubs wanted the boys who barked at him to come out and interact with puppy again to “make amends,” which I was like fuck no; they are not even going to lay eyes on my dog. Friend W is just not getting it at this point, is not receptive to what we’re saying, acting low-key pissed, and I’m like, k, we’re leaving. Say bye to this friend, but we ended up leaving without saying goodbye to any of the other friends inside. A part of this was because I had been crying, and another was that I was so pissed I think I would've cussed them out and ruined the night.
To say I am absolutely gutted and devastated is an understatement. I sobbed the majority of the 45-minute drive home. Hubs was quietly fuming. I am shaking and have stress hives as I type this. I am just so fucking upset. I'm extremely concerned this may have thrown him back into reactivity or undone all of his training. He was doing really well and interacting with people. Am I overreacting?! Friend W made me feel like I'm overreacting; hubs doesn’t think I am. If I’m not overreacting, I plan on texting said friends tomorrow and letting them know what they did was totally not okay, and if they are to be invited anywhere with puppy again, they need to treat him with kindness and respect, something that the girls there did effortlessly, I might add. I’m sorry for the novel. Asking this sub bc y'all know GSDs best and how they are.
