Am I the asshole for calling my aunt by her name?

Listener Write In

Hi, this will probably all sound really silly. I have adhd and I don’t know how to tell a story without every detail. I grew up around my dad side of the family because my mom isn’t close to hers. My mom’s mother was murdered by her father, who was an alcoholic when she was young. All the kids got split up and that’s how my mom met my dad. I have met my mom’s side of the family like twice in my whole life. For reference, I am 38f. Anyways, I’ve wanted to know them for forever. When I was young, I remember my mom getting really excited that her siblings were coming down to visit, then something would happen, and they never came. I just kinda assumed they didn’t want to know me or us honestly. I get they are all very traumatized. My aunt wrote a book detailing everything that happened in their childhood. I bought it, and read it because my mom won’t talk about any of it, and I wanted to know. I reached out to my aunt and got invited to a family reunion where I could meet my grandpas side of the family. I went and it was fine (a little awkward). But to the problem at hand. I was telling my mom about how I met alot of her half siblings and family. I referred to her sisters by name. She corrected me by saying aunt… I said I know they are my aunt, but I don’t know them. I’m trying to get to know them. I don’t want to call them aunt till I feel like they are. My mom got really upset about it and I’m trying to figure out if I’m just being stubborn about not calling them by aunt. I know it’s just a title. I want to know them, but I also feel like if I never reached out, we never would have talked. I don’t know what to do with all of this.
