When moving on feels like cheating
I left an eight-year relationship, and something I wasn't prepared for is how guilty I would feel simply imagining being loved differently.
Not even actually dating someone. Just daydreaming.
Sometimes I catch myself imagining what it would feel like for someone to speak to me tenderly. To care whether something hurt my feelings. To be excited to see me. To make me feel safe instead of confused. To love me in a way that doesn't constantly require me to explain why something hurts.
And then almost immediately, I feel guilty.
It feels weirdly like cheating. Or at least what I imagine cheating would feel like.
Which makes absolutely no sense because the relationship is over. I left. And I left for reasons that I still know were real, even when I miss him.
Maybe eight years of loving someone teaches your brain that loyalty means keeping the door closed to everybody else... even after you've finally walked out of it.
And I think there's another layer that makes me uncomfortable.
Sometimes imagining a future relationship feels good.
Not because there's a specific person waiting for me. There isn't. Or maybe there could be someday. I don't know. But I can imagine being cared for differently now, and there's something hopeful about that.
Then I feel awful for feeling hopeful.
Like I shouldn't get to fantasize about tenderness while I'm still grieving someone I loved for nearly a decade. Like I'm disrespecting what we had by acknowledging what I didn't have. Like wanting something healthier somehow means the love I felt before wasn't real.
But both things can probably be true.
Maybe I can allow myself to feel both. Or at least try, which would be new for me.
I can have loved someone deeply and still know I shouldn't have stayed.
I can miss him and still want something different.
I can grieve an eight-year relationship and occasionally feel excited that my story might not end there.
Maybe moving on doesn't begin when you stop loving someone.
Maybe it starts the first time you allow yourself to imagine that being loved could feel different. Can feel safe.
