Going from perm to contracting

I'm considering moving out of my perm role and looking at contracting options - just for variety / change. Both my partner and I are perm, full timers, 1 dependant on a mortgage in case that matters. In my 30s. Keen to hear about others that have made the switch and thoughts? Lotsa contract roles in my field ranging from 6 months to 2 years.
