Hot take - D5 is better than more expansions
I think at this point, so many live service series have proven that it’s better to eventually release sequels instead of just trying to keep one game going forever and ever and ever.
Destiny 2 is a prime example. Hype gradually fizzles out and the playerbase becomes more and more frustrated. Its engine was barely functioning. Now we have no more destiny 2, since all the players were just waiting for destiny 3.
Path of exile 2 is a perfect example of success with a sequel in the same genre. They had success and good rep from PoE and now PoE 2 has had insane success despite not even being released into 1.0 yet. D4 just had its success phase with the popularity of LoH. The general public really liked this dlc and it sold very well.
Wow is another example to a lesser degree. Wow was MASSIVE back in the day, and while it still maintains the mmo crown, it’s not nearly as popular as it was when it was fresh. Even now wow is in a lot of danger because it CANNOT get new, especially younger players. Soon, there will be no wow playerbase because they are extremely ancient.
New world is yet another example. It found tons of success at launch. The hype slowly fizzled out, dlcs weren’t selling as well, then the game just shut down iirc.
There’s a billion other examples but I don’t feel like typing anymore. There’s exceptions to the rule but it’s pvp focused games like league and csgo. Not saying Diablo needs to be like CoD, which is so many releases it fatigues the playerbase, but I think making new games at least once or twice every 10 years is how the franchise maintains a life.
