Behavior changes after a neuter?
Hi all!
I’m so excited to be getting my cat neutered at the end of this month! It’s been a long, painfully long, year of waiting to be able to do so! I found him as a stray estimated about 3 years old and he’s slowly taken to being an indoor cat pretty well!
I am wondering if any of these behaviors might change after his neuter?
- marking. He doesn’t do it everywhere, but certainly whenever he gets stressed
- he yowls at night and stalks the house. I’m not really sure why, and it’s not every single night either. He’ll go a few weeks being totally fine and then spend a week or two yowling, stalking, and sometimes marking
- I have an enclosed sun porch that he LOVES to go out on, but then he smells another cat (there are many, many outdoor cats in my neighborhood) and he’ll go absolutely insane and he has to come in. He’s not really allowed out there and hasn’t been out for a while because of it :/
- he actually does really well on a leash and I took him on a walk once, but he smelled something while out there and came in and IMMEDIATELY marked four times in a row one after the other on the wall. I was devastated because I wanted to bring him outside again because he stares out windows so longingly.
All of this written out like that makes it sound like he’s miserable, but he was going to die if I didn’t take him in, he was so, so sick. And he can’t go back outside because he has conditions that would kill him out there. Also, I love him, and I want what’s best for him (not being an outdoor cat). I promise he’s a happy boy that loves his churus, sleeping in my bed every night, and though he doesn’t love to cuddle, he spends hours letting you rub his cheeks and neck (his favorite activity).
I know that marking is a learned behavior, and probably won’t stop, and I don’t need it to. I’m very careful and I have a black light flashlight that I shine on his two spots where he goes every day, and immediately tackle that shit with an enzyme cleaner. He also doesn’t do it every day, honestly only a couple times a month. But really what I’d love most is for the smell to lessen and the behavior to lessen as well.
Okay thanks all, sorry for the long post!!
